What is the Role of White Box Testing in Cybersecurity?

Featured in:

Black box testing is highly functional in nature, and while it helps identify some key vulnerabilities a system might possess, it is not as wholesome as a complete and deep analysis of a system.

This is where the need for white box testing comes to the fore. Hackers with malicious intent don’t just attack systems which have obvious vulnerabilities. The most dangerous and talented black hat hackers know how to find vulnerabilities which are not obvious. This makes them very dangerous to stop and triggers the need for ethical hackers to be as smart at their detractors.

White box testing is a technique which allows ethical hackers to study systems at a much deeper level.

In this article, we discuss the role of white box testing in cybersecurity.

What is White Box Testing?

White box testing allows ethical hackers to test systems at a more internal level by studying how they behave beneath the surface. This type of testing is not entirely functional and allows ethical hackers to look deeper into the internal working and structure of an application to find important vulnerabilities.

Unlike black box testing where ethical hackers look for specific vulnerabilities of a system, white box testing involves covering the internal working of systems and covering weaknesses which are not obvious and visible on a cursory glance.

White box testing becomes important when ethical hackers have to deal with hackers with extensive knowledge of systems. Hackers that are capable reverse engineering an entire system and network structure are naturally a much greater threat to the working of a system than script kiddies. Thus, ethical hackers need to have a counter to the danger of such hackers.

In Conclusion

Like black box testing, white box testing is also a way to test the different vulnerabilities in a system. It is used by ethical hackers to gain a deeper understanding of how systems work on an internal level. Knowing how this technique works is important for ethical hackers.

In this article, we touched based on the important of white box testing and what the technique constitutes of. If you want to learn more about white box testing and its many uses in cybersecurity, join the best ethical hacking course in Delhi offered at Delhi Courses Academy.
